Great Website

Now you all know how crazy I've gotten lately. I've rid our house of chemical cleaners, I make Brad use organic shampoo and paraben free shaving cream and I'm thinking of using organic forumula when the time comes. Elias uses only BPA free bottles, teethers, toys, etc. To me it's a scary world out there and I'm going to do what I can to sheild my family from it. So in my rants and internet searches I found a great website, http://www.safemama.com/. It's great. It actually has cheat sheets you can download, print and bring to the store with you. I've been having an issue with finding a sunscreen for Elias, bam, first post on safemama today. To me California Baby is the way to go. Elias uses their bubble bath, shampoo and now sunscreen. I really wanted him to have eco-friendly diapers as well but they leak and are very uncomfortable for him. It's too bad that there are no reliable, affordable diaper services in the suburbs, but alas he's as green as can be. Anyway, I thought I'd share this site with everybody. I'm off to buy some 7th Generation laundry detergent, carpet cleaner and some Earth's Best baby food (Elias starts solids very soon). Call me crazy, but at least I feel I'm doing my part.

Hi there.

Great to see the resources you've listed for non-bpa stuff for kiddos.

Below, I've added some alternatives to BPA and where to get them. This is part info-bite, part plug for the store I opened to specifically help people avoid petroleum-based products.

2 - we use glass refrigerator dishes.

3 -I froze all of my daughter's breast milk and homemade baby food in 4 oz glass
jelly jars and was careful to leave room at the top so the glass wouldn't break.

4 - glass baby bottles

5 - My daughter's sippy cups are the safest form of stainless steel and made by Klean Kanteen

6 - Our water bottles are also Klean Kanteen

7 - We source cosmetics stored in glass and non-BPA plastics.

8 - All of my daughters toys are eco-painted wood, organic cotton or wool

9 - we avoid plastic wrappers and get much of our food from a local organic farm. It is clean, super high quality food and easy to do. Kids LOVE it! Many farms near all of us have programs called CSA's where you can get a box of in-season veggies w/great recipes once a week by paying a set fee, or making payments through out the year. Insurance companies such as Unity, Physicians Plus, GHC and many others will offer a rebate for folks joining CSAs. Find your local CSA:

10 - we use stainless coffee mugs instead of disposeable paper and plastic - can be found at any coffee chop

11 - avoid wearing polycarbonate glasses and lenses on your face and get hip glasses made of metal or... sustainable WOOD with glass lenses.

12 - buy canned goods from companies that do not line their cans with BPA like Eden Foods and Trader Joes.

13 - avoid supporting the making of Polycarbonate( Bisphenol-A) Compact Discs by purchasing songs digitally and downloading them onto your computer or IPOD.

Earth's Best is also less expensive than Gerber- at least at my grocery store and Target.

A note about Amelia's #3 - you should never freeze baby food in glass that is not manufactured for freezing (this includes baby food jars.) It can crack and sliver and I don't know that leaving room at the top makes a difference.

I made heaps of homemade (organic) baby food and froze it in ice-cube trays. Then stored some long-term in freezer bags.

Thanks Michelle and Amelia. I got Earth's Best food. It's only 7.50 a case at diapers.com. I bought 3 cases for when Elias starts solids. You get 12 bottles of food and it's much cheaper than Whole Foods.

Also we use all glass in the fridge, Elias also has only eco-friendly wood toys or non-BPA and don't use any paper coffee cups and only Sigg bottles. Elias has all non-BPA sippy cups as well, Born Free is our favorite!
